SunPod Charges Green Gears PHEV Prius

Bill Kammerer of Sunpods Solar stopped by to demonstrate the innovative solar array called ”Sun Pod”

SunPods Solar Solutions makes a prefab modular solar system that is extremely fast and easy to setup and produces up to 2.8kw of power. Each Sunpod can be fitted with solar panels and an inverter to meet the customers needs in terms of power output and grid tie capabilities. The finished sunpod is permanently installed on site using ground anchors and carries the same warranty as a roof mount system. Sunpod solar modules are produced in a factory in the San Jose area and have excellent quality chassis/frame, wiring and completely enclosed electronics. Factory production allows for a much higher quality build over traditional solar arrays which are built on site. An installed factory production solar module costs 15%- 20% less than a similar traditional solar system. One sun pod produces enough to charge two Prius PHEV vehicles simultaneously.

Steven Strong is an early solar designer who made headlines in the 70′s when he added solar panels to the White House under Jimmy Carter and more recently to Pac Bell park here in San Francisco. Steven has been a force in the solar industry from the begining. Green Gears helped Steve demonstrate how vehicles can interact with solar for the filmimg of a TV segment by Paul Steinbroner called Energy Rush TV.

One of the original creators of email for mobile phones Satish Dharmaraj contracted renown car builder George Barris to create the most distinctive and modern Hybrid that money can buy. The finished vehicle is a show stopper. It also has in car wireless internet for surfing the web while you are driving around town.

Green Gears Joins City College to Educate Automotive Technicians

Green Gears and City College of San Francisco will be colaborating on a federally funded education outreach program. The Project which is funded by a Federal stimulous package grant was the only proposal in the San Francisco Bay Area to recieve approval and funding. Thousands of proposals were reviewed and the 2 plus billion dollars of funding was divied up among a handful of inovative engineering, manufactoring and educational institutions. The Educational program designed by Green Gears and City College of San Francisco promisses to give automotive tech students an education based on real world experience, practices and polocies concerning hybrid and plug-in hybrid maintenance. As an inovator in Plug-in hybrid repair and conversion Green Gears is in a unique position to be able to offer students a practical hands on experience.

Nick Rothman of Green Gears and Pat Cadam of Green Gears and Pat’s Garage pictured at the 2008 San Francisco International Auto Show. We installed a PHEV battery live to help educate the show attendees about the fuel savings and environmental benefits of using a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). A video was shot before the show to help a larger crowd see the installation process.
